OBJECTIVES OF PROFESSIONAL MASTER 2:

This Master 2 is designed to train development and cooperation professionals working or willing to work with Latin America in three specific areas (associative life / institutional cooperation; international economic exchanges; environmental management).

This master has two objectives:

•    Give to future young professionals a general knowledge on the areas of development (political, social, economic, cultural, territorial, environmental) and on Latin America which gives them an opening to the world and develops their ability to distance themselves from their pratices and the professional environment they will work.

•    Provide practical skills (project management, construction of a logical framework, tools of environmental management, micro finance, etc. thanks to the courses taught by professionals) that support your integration in professional circles.

Career opportunities are several: research office, consulting, NGOs / associations / organizations of international solidarity, foundations, institutional structures (at local, regional, national levels), and sometimes enterprises.

The Professional Master2 is intended mainly for students with a social sciences background, but it also welcomes graduates whose prior background is more technical as requested by associations / organizations / international foundations (ex: agricultural or water and forests engineers, statistician, ecologist, jurist, etc.), as well as professionals in the context of continuous training.

IHEAL: An international atmosphere
IHEAL students come for one half from France or Europe, and for another half from Latin America. This diversity promotes intercultural exchanges, discoveries, and international openness.
The international atmosphere is enhanced by the presence of many Latin American teachers invited each year on specific Chairs and by existing partnerships between IHEAL and the Institute of the Americas (IdA, 175 rue du Chevaleret, 75013) and House of Latin America (217 Boulevard Saint Germain, 75007).
This international dimension is reinforced by the use of three languages during the training: French, Spanish, and, to a lesser extent, English. Portuguese can be learned through an initiation course. Language practice is often a decisive advantage, English (fluent), accompanied by Spanish and / or Portuguese, is mandatory in an international career.
Our Professional Master 2 was established in 1994 and its location within the Institute of Advanced Studies of Latin America (IHEAL) enables it to benefit from a training and research center and from a library of over 50 years.

ACADEMIC PATHS:

The master is organized around a common training and a specialization path, to be chosen between 3 possibilities:

“Economic exchanges”: this path aims to form students to economic issues in Latin America (development economics, macro economics, country risk, microcredit, fair trade, etc.)
This path is oriented towards internships in economic services in embassies, international organizations (Inter-American Development Bank, OECD, etc.), non-profit sector (faire trade, micro-finance), or SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises).

“Cooperation field”: this path focuses on development and cooperation in Latin America and elsewhere. Courses are both theoretical (ex: development theories) and practical (ex: funding of cooperation projects, cooperation professional practices, decentralized cooperation, etc.).
This path is oriented towards internships in non-profit sector, NGOs, international organizations (ONU, embassies, French Institutes / Alliances Françaises, etc.), as mission adviser, project officer, advocacy officer or consultant for examples.

“Environmental management”: This path is not a technical one. Students cannot gain in-depth technical knowledge in a one-year master. We are therefore open to engineers, agronomists or geographers-cartographers. We invite people with a technical background who want to gain knowledge on development and cooperation to apply for this academic path. Concerning students with a Social sciences background, this path offers an introduction to environmental management in Latin America, which will enable them to apply as advocacy officer in NGOs or as environmental educator (associations “Les Petits Débrouillards” and “Les Amis de la Terre”).

Attention : It is relatively easy to get an internship in NGOs, at a French Embassy or in decentralized cooperation, and possibly extend this internship by a VIA in another country. But then, job research can last long. In France, there are 200 masters on Cooperation / Development and at least five Masters on cooperation and development in Latin America. Moreover, Latin America is not necessarily the continent with which France has the most links in the field of cooperation (Africa is more central). Finally, it takes a few years of experience to qualify to apply for a position in an international institution. We want to encourage you in this way. Many are the former students from IHEAL who have managed to integrate the sector and who have developed challenging careers. However, you should be aware that you must be organized, determined and passionate to get there.

Additional Note: This Masters crowns a course of five years of study, often in the social sciences. It combines theoretical and practical lessons. If you have already received this type of training and are looking for a fully technical or practical training, you rather turn to highly specialized masters or training as AgroParisTech or Bioforce.
