The IHEAL proposes, for the period 2009-2013, a Research Master in Social Sciences, mention “International Studies”, with a specialty in “Latin American Studies” in partnership with two other departments of Paris 3 – Sorbonne Nouvelle University: the Department of European Studies Department and the Department of Anglophone World Department.
The second year (Master 2R) proposes a “training to research and by research”, and can be based on one disciplinary field (Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Sociology) or be multidisciplinary. This second year takes end with the writing of a Master’s thesis in French (100-150 pages).

Career opportunities
This training mostly prepares to research and teaching careers in France (universities, CNRS, IRD, etc.), in Europe, and in Latin America.
Experience shows that our graduate students can find a way of employability in services and consulting specialized on Latin-American matters as well; in businesses, associations, media, public institutions, regional and local authorities in relation to Latin America. These multidisciplinary studies enable also to better apprehend French and foreign administrative competitions, and the competitions to integrate international institutions.

An actual specialization
You have been selected to follow the specialty Research on your second year of Master’s degree training.
Anchoring in a discipline gives you the strength of a coherent and recognized worldwide intellectual formation. You then choose a disciplinary major which is under the responsibility of a tenured professor of IHEAL:

Anthropology: Capucine Boidin

Economics: Carlos Quenan

Geography – territorial planning – urbanism: Sébastien Velut

History: Olivier Compagnon

Political Science, Law: Renée Fregosi

Sociology:  David Dumoulin, Denis Merklen and Polymnia Zafgefka

However, in some cases, you may prefer to take courses in all disciplines because you specialize on a expertise theme rather than a disciplinary field. In accordance with your thesis supervisor, you will opt for a “multidisciplinary” research master deepening a specific theme through different disciplinary approaches.

The scientific context of the Institute is exceptionally rich.
The specialty “Latin American Studies” of the M2R (Research Master 2nd year) can count on a 30 years old research center, CREDA UMR7227 (mixed research center: CNRS – Sorbonne Nouvelle University), which constitutes a crucial exchange and meeting place for both Latin American and French Social sciences. This M2R is lead also within University Doctoral School 122 (ED122) “Latin Europe – Latin America”.
The excellent geographic location of the IHEAL, in the very heart of Paris, puts our students in contact with the main French (or even European) offer of cultural and academic events in relation with Latin America.
During your M2R, you will be in permanent relation with Latin American research.
This dialogue is assured by our professors who do regular fieldwork in America, but also by European and (Latin) American visiting professors that come and teach at the IHEAL each semester. This dialogue will also be strengthened by a very dense program of conferences and other scientific events within IHEAL.
Finally, everything is done to help you "make a fieldwork in Latin America" to build your own data on the continent (see abroad programs with Latin American universities).
Throughout the year you are also integrated in your discipline research team.
This allows you to meet senior researchers, PhD students returning after a long period of research "on the field", and also other students working on topics similar to yours.
Your participation in the M2R is a fulfilling and formative experience:
You have an opportunity to present your studies and work in a new electronic review of high quality, RITA, created on the initiative of doctoral students from IHEAL in 2008 (and which Editorial board has evolved and is now diverse). You also have the chance to publish a book issued from your Master’s thesis (M2R) since Chrysalide collection, created in 2007, publishes the best research papers from the IHEAL.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION TO M2R / Research Master 2nd year?

Each applicant must hold a master's degree (Master 1 or former “Maîtrise”) in Social Sciences, at the IHEAL or not, or equivalent degree with honors (“mention assez bien”), and a score greater than or equal to 14/20 at their paper introducing to research.
Each applicant must propose a detailed research project to one IHEAL research advisor.
For foreign students who do not hold a French academic degree and do not live in France: If you are currently living in a foreign country involved in the Campus France procedure, then you have to must make your request on their website:
Applications for admission to Master 2 will be reviewed by a commission chaired by Renée Fregosi, director of the Master, and composed of all tenured teachers, the director and the coordinator of the studies. Admission is pronounced by this commission and the office of the Graduate School (Ecole doctorale 122).
The dates of the commission's decisons depend on the date you submitted your application: These dates are given on the main page of the website IHEAL / CREDA.
